If you are an EU citizen, the principle of free movement grants you the right to live and work in Spain. However, you will need to obtain your **Número de Identificación de Extranjero (NIE)**. This identification number is essential for non-Spanish citizens and serves as the equivalent of a **DNI** for Spanish nationals. Having a **NIE** is crucial for paying taxes and completing various official processes, such as renting or purchasing property, setting up utilities, or opening a bank account.

NON EU CITIZEN

If you want to start a business in Mallorca being non-eu citizen, you have to apply for a Spanish work visa in the Spanish embassy. You’ll have to provide certain documents, which may include the following:
• A business plan
• Evidence that you have the appropriate finances to invest in it or support
yourself;
• Proof that you have the skills or experience to do the work;
• Any contracts or commissions from companies;
• Any licences or registrations required to carry out the work in Spain;
• Information about the potential to create employment in Spain.
Once approved you have to apply for an N.I.E and proceed as an EU citizen. You’ll have to renew your work permit and prove you still fulfill all these conditions every year. After five years you can apply for long-term Spanish resident status.
