Losing or damaging your vehicle’s documentation can become a real problem if you don’t know how to proceed. From our gestoría in Palma de Mallorca we explain the steps to follow in order to obtain a duplicate of the different car documents, whether it’s the registration certificate, the ITV card or the insurance certificate.

Duplicate of the registration certificate

The registration certificate proves the ownership of the vehicle and it is essential to always carry it with you. To request a duplicate, you must do it through the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), either:

• In person at the Provincial Traffic Headquarters (with an appointment).
• Online, through the DGT Electronic Office.
• By phone by calling 060.

Required documentation:

• Valid DNI or NIE.
• Proof of payment of the corresponding fee (approximately €20.81 in 2025).
• In case of theft or loss, it is advisable to have filed a police report.

The duplicate will be sent by postal mail within approximately two weeks to the address registered with the DGT.

Duplicate of the ITV card in Mallorca

If what you have lost or damaged is the vehicle technical inspection card (ITV), the procedure is different from that of the registration certificate. In Mallorca, the process is as follows:

• First contact the ITV station where the request will be made so they can verify the license plate and vehicle data. This verification may take 1 to 2 days.
• If the ITV card is valid, a new inspection is not required. If it is expired, the vehicle must pass the inspection before the duplicate is issued.
• Required documentation depending on the reason:
  • Theft: police report and a copy of the registration certificate.
  • License plate change: previous ITV document and registration certificate.
  • Other cases: additional documents may be requested.
• The duplicate can be requested in person at any ITV station in Mallorca (Palma, Inca, Manacor, among others).
• It can also be requested by phone (060), online through the DGT Electronic Office, or via the MiDGT app if the vehicle has an electronic ITV card (vehicles registered after May 2016).
• The delivery time for the duplicate is usually 2 to 5 days. In the meantime, a temporary certificate is provided so you can continue driving.
• The fee to be paid is approximately €8.67.

Duplicate of the insurance certificate

In case of loss of the car insurance documentation, you must contact your insurance company. The company will issue a new certificate at no additional cost in most cases.

How to book an appointment at Traffic in Palma de Mallorca

To carry out procedures such as the duplicate of the registration certificate at the Provincial Traffic Headquarters of Palma de Mallorca, it is mandatory to request an appointment. There are several ways to do this:

• Online: through the DGT Electronic Office. You only need to choose the Palma de Mallorca office, select the procedure and complete the required details. The system sends a confirmation with a reference code.
• By phone: by calling the general number 060 (may have a cost), or the direct number of the Mallorca office: 971 465 350.
• Mobile application: by downloading the MiDGT app (iOS and Android), which allows you to manage appointments and other procedures conveniently from your phone.

Address and opening hours: the Traffic Headquarters is located at Calle Manuel Azaña, 50, 07071 Mallorca. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 14:00, and service is only provided with an appointment.

Tip: one way to secure an appointment is to try booking right at 10 in the morning, when the system opens new available slots, to avoid the “no appointments available” message.

In practice, the fastest and most effective option is to request the appointment online on the DGT website or through the MiDGT app, although you can also try by phone.
